![]() ![]() Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition (2014–present) Variants of the beholder also appear in Monster Manual 2 (2009), and Monster Manual 3 (2010). With the release of the fourth edition of Dungeons & Dragons, the beholder once again appears in the Monster Manual for this edition (2008), including the beholder eye of flame and the beholder eye tyrant. Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition (2008–2014) The beholder receives its own chapter in the book Lords of Madness: The Book of Aberrations (2005). The mindwitness was a sample creature of the half-illithid template using a beholder as the base creature, featured on Wizards of the Coast's website on August 14, 2003. The beholder appears in the revised Monster Manual for the 3.5 edition (2003). Beholder variants appear in Monstrous Compendium: Monsters of Faerûn (2001). The third edition of Dungeons & Dragons included the Beholder in the Monster Manual (2000) with the expanded monster statistics of this release. The Beholder's xenophobia towards other subraces of Beholders was added after Jim Holloway submitted multiple designs for the Beholder's spelljamming ship and Jeff Grubb decided to keep them all and used xenophobia to explain the differences in design style. Jeff Grubb cites Keith Parkinson's artwork as the inspiration for the beholder-kin created for the Spelljammer campaign setting. īased on Tom Wham's depiction in the first edition Monster Manual, TSR artist Keith Parkinson characterized its popular appearance with plate-like armored scales and arthropod-like eyestalks. I, Tyrant expands the information on beholders through details of the race's history, religion, culture, settlements and psychology, and more. The book I, Tyrant (1996), and the Monstrous Arcana module series that accompanies it, develops the beholder further. It also appeared in the Monstrous Compendium Volume One (1989), and is reprinted in the Monstrous Manual (1993). Beholders feature prominently in the Spelljammer setting, and a number of variants and related creatures are introduced in the Spelljammer: AD&D Adventures in Space campaign set, in the Lorebook of the Void booklet (1989). Second edition supplements to Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, especially those of the Spelljammer campaign setting, added further details about these classic creatures' societies and culture. Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition (1989–1999) ![]() Moore authored "The Ecology of the Beholder", which featured in Dragon #76 (August 1983). With the release of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st edition, the beholder appeared in the first edition Monster Manual (1977), where it is described as a hateful, aggressive, avaricious spherical monster that is most frequently found underground. Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st edition (1977–1988) In 1991, it appeared in the Dungeons & Dragons Rules Cyclopedia. The beholder later appears in the Companion Rules set, in the Dungeon Masters Companion: Book Two (1984). It is described as a "Sphere of Many Eyes" or "Eye Tyrant", a levitating globe with ten magical eye stalks. The beholder was introduced with the first Dungeons & Dragons supplement, Greyhawk (1975), and is depicted on its cover (as shown in the section below). Rob Kuntz's brother Terry Kuntz created the Beholder, and Gary Gygax detailed it for publication. Unlike many other Dungeons & Dragons monsters, the beholder is an original creation for D&D, as it is not based on a creature from mythology or other fiction. Beholders have been used on the cover of different Dungeons & Dragons handbooks, including the fifth edition Monster Manual. Beholders are one of the few classic Dungeons & Dragons monsters that Wizards of the Coast claims as Product Identity and as such was not released under its Open Game License. The beholder is among the Dungeons & Dragons monsters that have appeared in every edition of the game since 1975. It is depicted as a floating orb of flesh with a large mouth, single central eye, and many smaller eyestalks on top with powerful magical abilities. The beholder is a fictional monster in the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game. ![]() Tom Wham's illustration of a beholder from the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual, 1977

![]() One of the most common surgical approaches in orthopedics involving the anterior compartment of the thigh is the lateral approach to the femur. Identifying the correct nerves when performing peripheral nerve blocks is essential. Thorough knowledge of regional anatomy is crucial to operating safely, avoiding neurovascular injury, and correctly identifying intermuscular planes in the region. Knowledge of anatomy allows the surgeon to find the area of the pathology, and understanding of the origins and insertions of the muscles helps to find a tendinous portion appropriate for graft reconstruction. Its floor is also muscular, with the adductor longus occupying the upper part of the floor and the adductor magnus occupying the floor below it. ![]() It is roofed by a fascial layer on which the sartorius lies, and the medial and lateral walls are defined by the adductor muscles and the vastus medialis, respectively. The adductor canal is an important anatomical space of the anterior thigh region because it is a neurovascular conduit carrying the femoral artery, femoral vein, saphenous nerve, and the nerve to vastus medialis. The psoas major is innervated by the short collateral branches of the lumbar plexus (L1-元), while the femoral nerve (L1-L4) innervates the iliacus muscle. Both muscles insert onto the lesser trochanter of the femur. The psoas major originates in the lumbar vertebrae, and the iliacus originates from the iliac fossa of the pelvis. The iliopsoas consists of two muscles: the psoas major and the iliacus. The iliopsoas muscle does not cross the knee joint and is responsible for flexion of the thigh and lateral rotation of the hip. The pectineus muscle originates at the pectineal line of the pubis and inserts at the posterior aspect of the femur, immediately inferior to the lesser trochanter. The pectineus is considered a transitional muscle between the anterior and medial thigh this is due to innervation mainly from the femoral nerve and sometimes from the obturator nerve. The pectineus muscle is responsible for flexion, adduction, and medial rotation of the hip. The pectineus forms the base of the femoral triangle and is flat and quadrangular in shape. The sartorius originates from the ASIS and inserts at the superior, medial surface of the tibia, and it is innervated by the femoral nerve. The sartorius muscle is responsible for flexion of the knee and flexion and lateral rotation of the hip joint and is the longest muscle in the body. It is positioned more superficially in the leg than the other muscles in the anterior thigh the long parallel fibers run anteriorly from lateral to medial over the quadriceps. The two heads converge to join as the anterior part of the quadriceps femoris tendon. The rectus femoris is comprised of two proximal heads: the straight head, originating at the anterior inferior iliac spine (ASIS) of the ilium, and the reflected head, originating from a groove superior to the acetabulum. It inserts at the lateral border of the patella, forming the deep portion of the quadriceps tendon. The vastus intermedius originates at the anterior and lateral surfaces of the femoral shaft. It inserts at the medial base and border of the patella, forming the medial patellar retinaculum and the medial side of the quadriceps femoris tendon. The vastus medialis originates at the inferior portion of the intertrochanteric line and medial lip of the linea aspera. It originates from the greater trochanter and lateral lip of linea aspera and inserts at the lateral base and border of the patella, forming the lateral patellar retinaculum and the lateral side of the quadriceps femoris tendon. The vastus lateralis is the largest of the four muscles. The rectus femoris is responsible for thigh flexion at the hip and knee extension. It receives innervation by the femoral nerve. The vastus muscles are responsible for knee extension and stabilization of the patella. ![]() The quadriceps femoris connects to the patella via the quadriceps tendon, which then extends to insert at the tuberosity of the tibia. This group is the primary extensor of the knee. The quadriceps femoris is a group of four muscles: vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius, and rectus femoris. Additionally, the end of the iliopsoas muscle passes through the anterior compartment. Three major muscles (better described as two muscles and one muscle group) comprise the anterior compartment of the thigh - the pectineus, sartorius, and quadriceps femoris. The function of the anterior compartment of the thigh is to extend the leg at the knee joint. ![]() “Wild bees are the top pollinators in most temperate regions, and widespread declines have prompted worries about food security as well as ecosystem function.” Rivers emphasized the importance of understanding bees’ habitat requirements and their response to human activity for effective conservation measures. Oregon is home to more than 600 species of native bees, with almost a quarter of them found in recently harvested forests. Native insect pollinators, primarily bees, are estimated to provide over $3 billion per year in commercial pollination services in the United States. She also highlighted that their research is among the first attempts to quantify how native bee communities change over time after a dominant forest disturbance in the Oregon Coast Range.īees are essential pollinators for nearly 90% of the Earth’s flowering plants, including many food crops, and contribute to insect and plant biodiversity. ![]() Zitomer explained the significance of these findings: “Our results are important for forest managers because they indicate that bees do use intensively harvested stands, and that the window for bee conservation measures is restricted to a relatively short time period.” They discovered that both the total number of bees and the number of different bee species dropped significantly with stand age, with an average decline of 61% and 48%, respectively, for each five-year increment after harvest. To conduct their research, the team examined native bee communities in 60 Douglas-fir stands of varying ages across a time frame representative of a typical 40-year harvest rotation during the spring and summer of 20. The scientists emphasize the need to close this knowledge gap, as bees play a vital role in pollinating many of the flowering plants that make up ecosystems and support food webs. He added that promoting open conditions and enhancing floral resources in the initial years following harvest are likely to encourage bee diversity in intensively managed forest landscapes.ĭespite growing concern over how human activity may be driving global declines in pollinator species, the impacts of land management practices on wild bees outside of agricultural systems remain largely unknown. “The research demonstrates that Douglas-fir plantations develop diverse communities of wild bees shortly after harvest,” said Rivers. The study, led by graduate student Rachel Zitomer and Jim Rivers, an animal ecologist in the OSU College of Forestry, was published in Ecological Applications. This study contributes to the understanding of forest management’s potential role in conserving crucial pollinator groups. Research conducted by Oregon State University has revealed that native bee populations in the Oregon Coast Range are flourishing in clearcut areas within a few years of timber harvest, only to experience a drastic decline as the forest canopy closes. You should spray the plants once a week until they are free of pests.īaking soda can be used as an antimicrobial agent in plants to combat fungal infections. This non-toxic insecticide is effective in killing insects that harm plants, such as aphids. Make a pesticide that is both safe and effective. If you’re having trouble with slugs in the garden, add a pinch of bicarbonate soda. Get rid of cabbage worms by mixing bicarb soda, vegetable oil, dishwashing detergent, and water. When baking soda is used, it will aid in the reduction of soil acidity, resulting in tastier tomatoes. The secret of tomato growth is to mulch the plants with baking soda. Baking soda is a natural pest repellent that works by repelling aphids without causing your plants to suffer. Baking soda can be used to keep them from attacking tomato plants by placing it at the base of the plants. Plants can be destroyed in as little as a day by these small pests, which are difficult to remove. Is It Good To Put Baking Soda Around Tomato Plants? In his picture, I used a lot of baking soda, but only about 1/4 cup per plant, so it should suffice. This process should be repeated once the tomatoes have reached half maturity. To make the tomatos sweeter, lightly sprinkle baking soda around the plant after they have begun to appear and are about 1 inch in diameter. ![]() Tomato plant foliage is caused by a fungal disease, and it does not thrive in dry conditions. You can prevent Blight by utilizing preventive measures rather than treating it. It is sufficient to destroy the fungi as long as it is only applied to the surface. This spray contains no more baking soda than is required to harm plants. When it rains, it is best to apply the spray after a rainstorm because fungal infections are usually rampant during this time. In a quart of water, combine one tablespoon of baking soda and several drops of dish soap. Make certain that the plants are sprayed on a regular basis to prevent both early and late blight. If used as a preventative measure, it can help to prevent fungal infections from destroying tomato plants. It can aid in the balance of pH for soils that are overly acidic, allowing more favorable plant growth to occur. So, if you’re thinking about using baking soda to help your tomatoes grow, it’s worth doing some further research to see if it’s right for you.īaking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is an alkaline kitchen ingredient that is widely used in home food gardens. Once it is added to the soil, it will eventually be neutralized by the other chemicals and minerals present. It’s possible that the conflicting results may be due to the fact that baking soda can only have a temporary effect on soil pH. Some studies have shown that it can help to improve fruit yield and quality, while others have found no significant difference. However, there is no definitive evidence that baking soda has any impact on tomato plant growth. In theory, this could make it an ideal tool for adjusting the soil pH to the ideal level for growing tomatoes. That means it has the ability to raise or lower the pH levels of a solution. But does it really work on tomatoes? Let’s take a closer look at the science behind this claim. ![]() Best wishes, Donald, and keep baking soda and vinegar on hand for many uses.Baking soda is often touted as a panacea for a variety of plants and garden problems. Wait at least 30 days, with re-sprinkling/powdering/spraying if needed, before you add new topsoil and work that in. (You can mix the baking soda and vinegar at 1 pound of soda and 1 cup of vinegar, but it will foam like crazy, so use a BIG bowl, allow it to settle, then pour into a quart spray bottle.) work this mixture into the soil. This will kill any roots, vines, plants, and most bugs in the area. But to be sure, use either a commercial blight killer from a farm and garden store, or use a heavy powdering of baking soda with vinegar sprayed over it. With the removal of the plants, the bugs have probably moved on. ![]() Probably, some sort of beetle or boll has brought the blight. Do not put the grass or plants in a compost heap in your yard. If you haven’t already, dig up all the affected plants and put them in a plastic bag to be carried off. ![]() There are fungus-spread blights and insect-spread blights, and the baking soda will help the soil of either.
